CFEL-Symposium & Topping Out Ceremony

Juli 20th 2010: The Center for Free-Electron Laser Science celebrated the topping out of the future CFEL home together with the three partner organizations and the Town of Hamburg. CFEL held a scientific symposium in the morning followed by the topping out in the early afternoon.

Prof. Dr. Joachim Ullrich - head of the CFEL managing board, the CFEL MPG ASG and Director of the MPI for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg - gave his welcome to the audience in the FLASH seminar room.

The first presentation was given by Prof. Dr. Joachim Stöhr, LCLS Director at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory:

Followed by Prof. Dr. Henry Chapman, CFEL, Director Coherent Imaging Division at DESY presenting on:
Coherent X-ray diffraction at X-ray Free-Electron Lasers

After the coffee break the symposium continued with the talk of Prof. Dr. Tsumoru Shintake, Accelerator Group Director at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research (RIKEN) in Japan:
Coherent illumination of Angstrom-scale matter with high/low fast/slow photon/lepton waves

The final presentation was given by Prof. Dr. Andrea Cavalleri, CFEL, Director Condensed Matter Division at the Max Planck Research Department for Structural Dynamics at the University of Hamburg :

Impressions from the CFEL Topping Out

The topping out ceremony started with the flags of Germany, the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and the three CFEL partner organizations University of Hamburg, Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron, and the Max Planck Society at 3 pm.

The first address was given by the Science and Research Senator of Hamburg Dr. H. Gundelach. She expressed her pride and her thankfulness to all those committing themselves to the idea of an interdisciplinary research center for Free-Electron Laser Science in Hamburg.

The Vice-President of the University of Hamburg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Siegfried Stiehl pointed out that the unique cooperation between DESY, MPG and the University of Hamburg has already achieved excellent networking within the three organizations in the field of FEL science.

Prof. Dr. Martin Stratmann, Vice President of the Max Planck Society, wished all CFEL scientists the power, endurance, intuition and enthusiasm to explore their fascinating new research field.

Prof. Dr. Helmut Dosch, Chairman of the DESY Board of Directors, expressed his conviction that CFEL will set new standards in research and will dramatically expand the borders in bio and nano science.

As final speaker Prof. Dr. Joachim H. Ullrich, chair of the CFEL Management Board and Director at the MPI for Nuclear Physics, thanked the city of Hamburg for their strong commitment and the architects for their excellent architecture.

The ceremony ended with the topping out toast by the construction foreman, the raise of the topping out wreath...
