Laying of the Foundation Stone
On September 29th 2009, a first milestone in the construction of the CFEL building was achieved with the laying of the foundation stone. The ceremony was opened by a short greeting by Hamburgs’ Senator for Science and Research Dr. Herlind Gundelach. Then the Vice President of the University of Hamburg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Siegfried Stiehl, the DESY director of administration Christian Scherf and the head of the CFEL managing board, MPI Director Prof. Dr. Joachim H. Ullrich addressed the audience.
Afterwards the four speakers placed the traditional items into the time capsule, e.g. the newspaper of the day, current coins and the architects’ drawings of the CFEL building. Also included were several scientific papers of the CFEL group leaders and some special items related to their research: the prototype of a pnCCD detector chip and the CFEL logo drilled in a silicon wafer with a focused ion beam. The copper capsule was sealed and buried in the ground plate of the building. At the end of the ceremony, the audience celebrated the event with a small reception in the adjoining PETRA III hall.

Vice-President of the University of Hamburg Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hans Siegfried Stiehl and the DESY director of administration Christian Scherf give short speeches regarding the importance of CFEL for their organizations.
MPI Director Prof. Dr. Joachim H. Ullrich addressed the audience on behalf of the Max-Planck Society and in his function as head of the CFEL managing board.
A crowd of ca. 150 people has appeared in front of the PETRA III hall to attend the laying of the foundation stone despite the harsh weather conditions.
The Newspaper of the day - Hamburger Abendblatt - and scientific publication from the CFEL researches are placed into the time capsule...
.... then the invitation card for the event and some coins ....
...followed by the prototype of a pnCCD detector chip and the architects drawings for the CFEL building....
....finally the time capsule is closed, sealed and inspected before....
....it is brought down in the construction site....
....placed in the central ground plate of the CFEL building....
...and buried with concrete.
The laying of the foundation stone is then celebrated with a small reception in the PETRA III hall adjoing the CFEL construction site.
