Jochen Küpper joins CFEL as independent Group Leader for the Controlled Molecule Imaging Group
On October 1st, 2010 Jochen Küpper joined the Center for Free-Electron Science as a Professor jointly appointed by the University of Hamburg and DESY. He will lead the Controlled Molecule Imaging Group within the CFEL Coherent Imaging Division.
Jochen Küpper is a well-known molecular physicist and physical chemist with about 40 peer-reviewed publications. He has earned several fellowships and awards, e. g., a Feodor-Lynen fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and the Nernst-Haber-Bodenstein Prize of the German Bunsen Society for Physical Chemistry. In 2000 he finished his dissertation on high-resolution laser spectroscopy of molecular interactions at the University of Düsseldorf. Following postdoctoral stays at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the USA and at the FOM Institute for Plasma Physics “Rijnhuizen” in The Netherlands he became group leader at the Fritz Haber Institute of the Max Planck Society in Berlin in 2003.
Jochen Küpper’s research is centered around the control of large molecules in the gas phase. This control is based on the manipulation of the translational motion of large neutral molecules and the alignment and orientation of ensembles of molecules in space using electric fields. He extended these experimental techniques to sort molecules according to their quantum state and to spatially separate structural isomers. These unique samples are exploited in photoelectron experiments using ultrashort laser pulses in the NIR, EUV and X-ray regimes. He is particularly interested in molecular interactions and intra and inter-molecular molecular dynamics.
