On September 19th, 2011, Sebastian Loth joined the Max Planck Department for Structural Dynamics (MPSD) at CFEL as a Max Planck Research Group leader. He will set up and lead the “Dynamics of Nanoelectronic Systems” Group. The group is jointly hosted at MPSD in Hamburg and the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart.

Sebastian Loth is an experimental physicist with focus on quantum phenomena at the nanoscale. His primary research tool is a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM). Sebastian designed several experiments to interact with individual nanostructures at atomic dimensions.

Sebastian received his PhD from the Georg-August University of Göttingen (Germany) in 2007. His dissertation on local properties of dopants in semiconductors was sponsored by the German National
Academic Foundation. In 2008 Sebastian was awarded a Feodor-Lynen fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation and joined the IBM Almaden Research Center in San Jose, California (USA) to study single atom spintronics.

Recent work includes the observation of electric-field driven wave function deformation in active semiconductor devices and the discovery of quantized spin-momentum transfer in small spin systems. In Andreas Heinrich’s group at IBM he developed an STM-based all-electronic pump-probe technique that made it possible to image the dynamical evolution of individual atomic spins for the first time.

At CFEL, Sebastian’s research group will pioneer new techniques to capture atomic scale dynamics in the electronic properties of coupled spins, molecules, and correlated electron systems.
