On August 1st, 2012, Dr. Guoqing “Noah” Chang - joined CFEL’s Ultrafast Optics and X-rays Division of DESY as a Research Group Leader. He will set up and lead the “Ultrafast Fiber Optics” group, which is a Helmholtz Young Investigators Group jointly funded by Helmholtz Association, DESY, and University of Hamburg for the duration of five years.

Noah graduated with a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Center for Ultrafast Optical Science at the University of Michigan in 2006. His dissertation, nonlinear propagation and high power terahertz generation using ultrashort pulses, has been awarded the Horace H. Rackham Distinguished Dissertation Award of 2006—the highest honor given in recognition of the most exceptional scholarly work produced under the auspices of the University of Michigan. After staying at the University of Michigan as a postdoctoral research fellow at Professor Almantas Galvanauskas’ group for about one year, he joined Professor Franz Kӓrtner’s research group as a postdoctoral research associate in the Research Laboratory of Electronics at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Noah’s research is focused on high-power ultrafast fiber lasers (e.g., laser device, oscillator, amplifier, etc.), ultrafast nonlinear optics (e.g., high-power terahertz generation, fiber-optic Cherenkov radiation, single-cycle pulse compression, parabolic similaritons), and femtosecond frequency combs. He has authored over 90 peer-reviewed publications including 26 journal papers and 70 conference papers.

At CFEL, Noah’s research group will continue pushing the limits of ultrafast fiber laser technologies and apply them to laboratory-based EUV/X-ray sources, laser electron acceleration, mid-IR frequency combs for spectroscopy, cavity enhanced ultrafast nonlinear optics.
