GORE 2023

For those interested in soccer, robots or both, there is an opportunity to rediscover the sport this April. From April 27 to 30, the GORE event will take place in CFEL - and robots from the University of Hamburg will also be there.

The Hamburg participants are 82 centimeters tall and thus play in the so-called "Humanoid Kid Size League". They are developed, trained and set up by members of the student working group "Hamburg Bit-Bots", which is also funded by the Excellence Strategy of the German federal and state governments.

The special feature is that the robots play soccer autonomously against each other, which means there is no remote control. In addition to the humanoid league, there are also matches in the so-called "Standard Platform League," in which all teams use the same type of robots.

"RoboCup is a competition to promote robotics research - with a special focus on humanoid robots," explains Jasper Güldenstein, a doctoral student in the Department of Computer Science and one of the Robo coaches. The "German Open Replacement Event" (GORE) is one of several RoboCup competitions that take place worldwide.

Why the robots behave the way they do and what is behind the technology is explained to the spectators at GORE by expert commentators. This makes the RoboCup world accessible even to those who are not yet familiar with robotics.

"We are organizing GORE together with the HULKS from the Technische Univerität (TU) Hamburg and the RoboCup team from TU Dortmund," says Güldenstein. A total of twelve robot teams and their humans will participate in the tournament, which will take place in the CFEL building and is organized jointly with DESY. Admission to the event is free and for those who cannot be there live, there will be a livestream again this year.
